The Pain of Dealing with Being Betrayed

By Kate Walker

Imagine this: an individual walks toward a park full of relatives and buddies. From a safe distance and with no warning, he pulls a grenade out of his pocket, pulls the pin, and tosses it into the gang. The explosion is terrible. He rushes to his vehicle, pulls our a paramedic's uniform, and rushes back to the scene where he sincerely makes an attempt to administer first aid. He's shocked when his friends react with resentment and bafflement at his endeavors to comfort and heal their pain.

If something like this really occurred, it might make the reports, right? The scenario describes the bafflement and discomfort of cheating, and implies the troublesome betrayed meaning for the spouse. In fact, grenades in the guise of wedding cuckoldry are thrown each day it usually remains a secret, confined to non-public houses between the betrayer and the tricked or exposed in the offices of marriage advisors.

As a fidelity advisor focusing on infidelity, I try and help recovering couples understand the perplexity behind this cycle and the way to define betrayal. We know the pain experienced by the betrayed can be similar to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder experienced by infantrymen wounded in war. He may experience foreboding and depression, sleeplessness and intrusive thoughts, hyper-vigilance, and an incapacity to maintain day to day activities.

As the betrayer rushes in to comfort the damage he or she has been the cause of, the partner vacillates between needing intense closeness and insisting he get away or leave the home. Couples in this stage may very well experience great sex, intimate talks, and open emotional expression. Just as fast nonetheless , their proximity can change into confusion, angriness, and even violence due to the blurred lines between trust and betrayal. This first roller-coaster is ordinary but it could be hard for loved ones to be supportive because they are definitely a part of the collateral damage too.

Couples endeavoring to find equilibrium may discover they require help from a professional who understands the cycle of infidelity recovery, and who can also administer the hope the couple wants.
